UHF Repeater GB3CR

The local 70cm voice repeater has been in service now for some 20 years. It has performed very well, giving excellent coverage, with very little down time. It is now on its new site, some 2km from its original one. More of this later!. At the beginning with help from GW4BTW, GW4GTE, G3ATZ, and many others, it was sited at the north end of Hope mountain, some 800ft asl. The original home was built like a brick outhouse. That's because it WAS a brick outhouse!!. I helped myself to remove the old toilet. The equipment was x pye uhf link gear, with homebuilt logic, and the whole thing proved very reliable. The biggest problem tended to be the wind, which did its best to flatten the aerials. In latter years it moved a few feet, and lived in a wooden box on legs, or as we called it, the rabbit hutch....

In recent times, It became the target of one of the light fingered brigade, or to put it another way, It got nicked!!. This could have been a major problem accept that we were in the middle of replacing the whole thing. The biggest problem with replacing the repeater, was the paperwork. It was also decided to move the unit to a different location while we were at it. It is now at the other end of Hope mountain, at about 1000ft asl, and in a nice warm building, complete with alarm!.
It is now being looked after by Neil G8UEK, and consists of a Storno commercial repeater, with added logic. At the moment it is two aerial working, but we hope to go single aerial working shortly. It is all a matter of money.
The repeater comes under the umbrella of the north west repeater group, UKFMW, but the refurbishment has cost the group nothing. Thanks to the site owner, running costs are zero.
